When you’re suddenly hit with bad news or a problem of some sort, who do you turn to? Your spouse? Your mom? Your pastor? All of them may be helpful and very supportive, and give you encouragement and wise counsel. But there is Someone more helpful, supportive, encouraging and full of wisdom than anyone else you know!
Yes our God is love, mercy and forgiveness, but His character encompasses much, much more! So the Bible gives us many names of God to help us understand more fully who He is. One is El Roi, the “God Who Sees Me.” In fact He knew what was going to transpire beforehand. I can be comforted that God sees me and knows what I am going through at any given moment in time.
Then I can trust that if He knew about the “problem” in advance, He also has a solution at the ready. Therefore I can call on Yahweh Yireh, the “Lord Will Provide,” and know that He has more than enough wisdom to create (Elohim: “God, Mighty Creator”) an answer that will be superior to that of man!
In trusting that God will provide, I am assured that He is Yahweh Tsuri, the “Lord My Rock.” He is faithful and can always be counted on. His purposes and plans are firm! He is Yahweh Roi, the “Lord My Shepherd” who leads and guides me. He always has my best interests and welfare at heart. I can also call on Yahweh Nissi, the “Lord My Banner” (or My Sign of Victory/Conquest). He is powerful enough to overcome any situation.
Therefore, I can rejoice in Miqweh Yisrael, the “HOPE of Israel!” I know God is trustworthy, and that I can hope in Him and His goodness, mercy and power. Then, with all I know God is and can do, I can rest in Yahweh Shalom, the “Lord is Peace.” God can bring his completeness and perfection to the situation, and I can have the peace that comes from living in harmony with Him.
These are just a few of God’s names. So who are you going to call? I encourage you to call upon the one who loves you completely, cares for you deeply, and had all your days written in a book before you even came to be. Call upon your Creator, your Father, your God. I promise you, He will answer!
